In the past, LOEX conferences have addressed many instructional issues, from marketing library instruction to cooperation with faculty and teaching critical evaluation. This new publication returns to the basics of library instruction as they relate to the new challenges of the profession. These basics are teaching, learning, and what programs really work.

Programs That Work is the 28th title in the Library Orientation Series by Pierian Press. The title contains the proceedings from the 24th National LOEX Library Instruction Conference.

The conference keynote speaker, Lizabeth A. Wilson, associate director of libraries for public service at the University of Washington Libraries and a long-time and successful library instruction practitioner, provides the reader with a set of principles for good instructional programs -- followed by Debra Gilchrist's (library director at Pierce College) article on the use of the abilities model and outcomes assessment in library instruction.

A third major paper explains the PREMIER Program (a program sponsored by the Michigan Library Associations's Information Literacy Roundtable). This program aims to help Michigan libraries develop instructional programs and make existing programs work.

Programs That Work is further enriched by a panel discussion led by five librarians from libraries with programs that work: Earlham College, Queen's University, Florida International University, SUNY-Plattsburgh, and Coastal Carolina University. Although the institutions and the methods differ, the panel members are enthusiastic about their past and continuing successes. This is a lively discussion highlighting major problem areas for instruction librarians.

Programs That Work also contains 19 instructive and poster sessions, making it a practical resource for developing effective programs.

The volume also includes the annual library instruction and information bibliography by Hannelore B. Rader and the roster of conference participants. E-mail addresses are provided where possible.
